You have probably heard of the power outage that hit us an hour ago. Power was gone in our apartment for 10-15 minutes. Being from Pakistan, a power outage like this can simply be ignored. Even though the places I have lived in Pakistan got very few outages and blackouts (loadshedding as they called it in Pakistan), it still happened often enough. The worst cases were some small towns and villages where the blackouts lasted for 8 or more hours a day.
UPDATE: It seems that the power in New York is still out. Amber is telling me that her work is also running on generators right now.
UPDATE II: I probably should have made clear in the post that we live in Middlesex country in central Jersey.

sal: Yes, I am a grad student at Tech. I have read your blog a few times and did notice that you were from the Atlanta area as well. I am not much involved with the local Pakistani/Muslim community but do know a few people. At the very least, you and I probably have some mutual acquaintances.
You lucky stiff. My neighborhood came back up about an hour ago – we were out for 23 hours. Walking home yesterday was fun, but I’d rather it weren’t an everyday occurrence.
Power came back inmy building (in ottawa) at about 2am. The, becuase of rotating brown-outs, I lost it again for a few hours this afternoon.
Not too big a deal. Across the river in Quebec, everything was normal — the run on a different grid.
power came back for us a 3.15 pm….that’s about 23 hrs like jonathan….not as bad as it could’ve been…bu it still sucked!! i drive from queens to jersey city for work so i managed to get out w/o walking….thank god its over!
I guess “where were you when the power went out?” has become an interesting topic of conversation. After all, such large blackouts don’t happen very often. Even in pakistan where blackouts are very common, large ones are rare.
rabs: Where have you been? Seems like you have abandoned your blog.
